“Love is like the wind. I can’t see it, but I can feel it,” Landon Carter said. Who can ever forget a love story between Landon Carter and Jamie Sullivan? How they met each other’s gaze in an unexpected way? How they felt and experienced love in their lives? How love changes each other’s point of views?
I will tell you why this movie made me put a big smile on my face, feel the butterflies inside my stomach, face the thrill of magic and love and suddenly in the end, made me cry.
A Walk to Remember is a 2002 American romance film based on the 1999 romance novel of the same name by Nicholas Sparks. The film stars Shane West and Mandy Moore, was directed by Adam Shankman, and produced by Denise Di Novi and Hunt Lowry for Warner Bros.
I watched this film during my teenage years and I could really consider this as one of the heart-warming and touching movie I had ever watched. It is absolutely dreadful to ever meet someone who was an opposite of you – on your acts, beliefs, routines and habits. Like Landon and Jamie suffer from various differences, however, this thing called fate let them meet and fall in love. As their close physical proximity that made their worlds be together, this hammering hearts of them became as one beating rhythm then poof! It became love.
It really feels great to fall in love – to do things and to go to a wonderful place together, to see yourself smile in each and every day, to make your wishes written on your wish list come true and to see someone who protects you from your foes. Similar to Landon, it felt like he wants to spend more and more time with Jamie. To be with Jamie always is his dream and he had never planned to see himself fall in love with her but he fall unexpectedly.
In reality, all the moments you use together with your special someone and all memories you instill on your minds made light up your day. To see yourself hoping and whispering to our dear God, “I wish this moment lasts,” is extremely possible. But as you fall deeply, madly, irrevocably in love with someone, there came a massive problem which turned our lives upside down. There moved toward to some troubles such as you two have to face break-ups, you have to be apart and long distance made your heart tremble, she/he might love another and the hardest part is your partner is suffering from such illness that God may take him/her from you anytime.
In here, Landon did not experience any of the written reasons above, otherwise, Jamie is suffering from Leukemia and the worst thing is she already stopped her treatments and medications. As every one of us expecting, Landon gets angry but Jamie explained to him, she was moving on with her life but then Landon happened and she fell in love with him.
Jamie’s cancer gets worse but Landon doesn’t leave Jamie’s side. He continues to fulfill various wishes on Jamie’s list, such as building her a telescope so she can see a comet. Through this, they both understand the nature of love and an unpredicted thing happened. Landon asks Jamie to marry him and the marriage happened on the same chapel as was Jamie’s deceased mother, the event that topped Jamie’s wish list. The movie ends with Jamie’s death.
Like an ordinary phenomenon on our daily lives, sometimes, we encounter the most terrible thing called “end.” Yeah, we are all aware of that, but, have you ever imagined losing someone you love? Isn’t ironical? You definitely love him/her but then he/she left you. On the first place, I did not expect a sad ending of this wonderful love story of Landon and Jamie and I started to think why the author Nicholas Sparks decided to end it like this. And I figured it out why.
Four years later, Landon visits Jamie’s father. Jamie helped him to focus and become a better person. He tells Jamie’s father that he is sorry he could not grant Jamie’s wish to witness “a miracle” before she died. Her father says “She did. It was you.”
Landon did not ever know he was a miracle to Jamie’s life. He did not learn how Jamie appreciate him in every single way he had done for her, how he made her smile and how she was very thankful to meet her. He understands it all when Jamie’s father told him so.
The quotation written on this blog, found on the first line, was Landon’s tagline in this movie and this is my favorite line. He said this when the movie ends. The theme of the ending seems to be so sad because one of the protagonists died, but, I appreciate it, oh, so well. Since the nature of love does not require seeing someone you love, to have him/her on your side everyday but you only have to feel the love within your heart and let it shine in you.
And to end this blog, I will leave you another quotation to ponder from A Walk to Remember film, “Love is always patient and kind. It is never jealous. Love is never boastful or conceited. It is never rude or selfish. It does not take offense and is not resentful”.
